Forum Description The National Film Centre of Latvia in collaboration with European Documentary Network organizes the 22nd Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries (Baltic Sea Docs). The aim of the Forum is to create a platform where documentary producers pitch their latest projects to a number of commissioning editors from the Baltic, Russian and European television channels, international film distributors, sales agents and institutions.

Who can apply ·         Independent production companies from the wider Baltic Sea Region countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden)
·         Independent production companies from developing democracies of the former Soviet Union;
·         Independent production companies from other countries of the former Eastern Bloc (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Romania)
·         Independent production companies from other European countries if the documentary subject relates to the greater Baltic Sea Region.
What kind of projects Producers may enter up to 3 projects each. Apart from traditional documentaries the BSD also provides a platform for cross media projects and documentary animations. One project may be sent in for selection up to 3 times. Projects pitched in the previous editions are ineligible. Priority is given to projects having some financial commitment from broadcasters or film institutions. Projects by first time filmmakers are also eligible.
Application Deadline Thursday, June 7, 2018
Application Documents (must be submitted in English) The on-line Application Form, including:

·         short description of the production company, producer and director (max 150 words each),
·         long synopsis of the project (max 350 words),
·         one print quality photo representing the project and the producer and other filmmakers pitching the project,
·         a link to the trailer/visual material of the current project.

Catalogue A project catalogue will be produced and distributed to the commissioning editors prior to the pitching sessions containing one-page description of the production company, producer and director, one-page synopsis of the project, a photo representing project and photos of the filmmakers pitching the project.

Selection Selection of projects will be made by July 10, 2018. Immediately after the decision is made, producers will receive the results via e-mail. The main criterion of the selection will be the international potential of the project entered. The decisions of the Selection Committee will be final.
Conditions for Participation Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. There is no participation fee. The support for accommodation costs of the producers with selected projects is subject to further agreement between the film institutions of all 3 countries.

Other countries. There is no participation fee. The producers with the selected project cover their travel and accommodation costs themselves.

Observers Producers may attend BSD as observers without pitching a project, registering by August 13, 2018 via Observer Accreditation Form
Pitching Subject to overall considerations of time, each project may be pitched for 7 minutes, with further time for discussion at the discretion of the moderators. Each project may be pitched by up to two representatives. Please, note that the pitch has to be supported with video clips of your new project. The presentation of the project should be done in English.
Individual Meetings In the afternoon of the pitching day (Saturday or Sunday) the producer will have the chance to meet interested commissioning editors, distributors and sales agents (20 min. per meeting).The meetings will be booked by BSD staff based on the interest received from the buyers.
Workshops  Pitching Training Workshop will be organized from September 5 to 7. The pitchers will work intensively on improving their project presentation with the aid of 7 international tutors with extensive industry experience, lead by Mikael Opstrup, Head of Studies, EDN. In addition to this a professional editor will give advice on the structure of trailers and editing equipment will be available for making minor changes if necessary. We strongly advise to take part in the workshop, as its usefulness has been proven over the years.

A workshop dedicated to the transformation of analogue documentary idea into interactive digital story will be organized in the afternoon of Friday, September 7. Tutors of the workshop – Laure Cops (NuNam, Belgium) and Donald Rabinovitch (CINEMAFLIX Distribution, USA).

The working language of the workshops will be English.
